What is Black Friday?

In recent decades, we have witnessed a huge number of global retailers adopting the term and date, popularly known as Black Friday, to market their own products at greatly discounted prices. Most often in the United States, we witness that there are cases where people, the night before Black Friday, station themselves in front of stores, malls, department stores with tents and wait the next morning to be the first in line, so that they have the opportunity to get what they want. buy and which is really at a huge discount. So, it used to be the practice for retailers to open their stores at 6 in the morning, but in the late 2000s, they already started opening at 4 in the morning (and the shopping lasts until 5 in the morning the next day). In 2011, some retailers (Target, Kohl's, Macy's, Best Buy and Bealls) opened their stores at midnight for the first time in the history of this day. A large number of employers give their employees Black Friday as a day off.

There is almost no person who has not heard about the existence of Black Friday, from the youngest to the oldest, but do you know where the origin of the term Black Friday comes from and what exactly it means?

There are several theories about its meaning and origin, some of them negative, some of them positive. In both, it is the day after Thanksgiving (a holiday celebrated by Americans and which heralds the beginning of shopping for the holiday season).

Namely, one of the theories says that in the 60s, public transportation drivers and police in Philadelphia and Rochester complained about heavy traffic on this day, calling it "the most chaotic shopping and traffic day of the year." The smoke that "suffocated" them was of course - black, hence the term Black Friday.

Another theory is that the merchants themselves were constantly operating at a financial loss for almost the entire calendar year (from January to November) and they made their profits precisely for the duration of the holiday season (specifically starting one day after Thanksgiving). But how was all this recorded in the financial records? Accounting practices used a red pen to show negative amounts and a black pen to show positive amounts. Exactly Black Friday was the very beginning of the period when merchants were no longer "red", but "black".

The positive theory it was developed by industrialists and merchants themselves, who did not like this negative connotation for the day at all, so they gave it a more positive meaning, marking it as a day for shopping with huge discounts all over the world.

Over the years, more precisely since the beginning of the 21st century, as an attempt to introduce Black Friday outside the United States, this sensation has spread all over the world, so stores, shopping centers, and the industry in general around the world. is preparing for the Black Friday infestation and often the discounts can last the whole weekend, week or month. Known as Black Friday week or Black November.

Also, the first Monday after Black Friday is named Cyber Monday.
